هنر صخره‌ای یکی از باستانی‌ترین اشکال بیان هنری بشر و یکی از مرموزترین آنهاست. قرن‌هاست که محققان و دیگر ناظران برای تفسیر معنای چهره‌های مرموز حکاکی شده یا نقاشی شده بر روی هنرهای صخره‌ای باستانی و درک نقش آنها در زندگی سازندگانشان که مدت‌هاست ناپدید شده‌اند، تلاش کرده‌اند و دانشگاه‌های ایران از وجود فراوان و باستانی آنها بی‌اطلاع هستند.
